Strasbourg have completed the signing of midfielder Diogo Sousa from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes, the club announced on Wednesday. The 20-year-old has signed a contract with the Ligue 1 outfit that runs until 2031, with a reported fee of around €10 million. Sousa arrives as the second major addition for Strasbourg this summer, following the earlier capture of goalkeeper Milosz Piekutowski.
Sousa progressed through the Vitoria Guimaraes academy and made his professional debut last season, featuring in 28 matches across all competitions. He scored one goal in 22 Primeira Liga appearances and was part of the squad that won the Portuguese League Cup. The move to Strasbourg represents a significant step in his career, offering regular first-team football in a top-five European league.
The transfer is strategically important for Strasbourg as they anticipate departures in midfield. Valentin Barco is expected to leave the club, and it is unlikely that the option to purchase Rafael Luis, currently on loan from Benfica, will be exercised. Sousa’s arrival helps to address the potential void left by these players, providing competition and depth in the centre of the park.
Strasbourg are currently in a period of transition following the departure of manager Gary O’Neil to Ipswich Town. The club has yet to appoint a successor, creating some uncertainty around the direction of the team. However, the signing of Sousa demonstrates a commitment to strengthening the squad ahead of the new season, regardless of who takes charge. The addition of a young, promising talent like Sousa suggests Strasbourg are building for the future and aiming to establish themselves as a consistent force in Ligue 1.
