Stuttgart Held to Draw by Werder as Demirovic Rescues Point
VfB Stuttgart's push for a top-four finish in the Bundesliga hit a stumbling block as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Werder Bremen on Sunday. Ermedin Demirovic came off the bench to head in a 61st-minute equalizer for Stuttgart, cancelling out Jens Stage's 18th-minute opener for the visitors. The result leaves Stuttgart in fourth place, the final automatic Champions League qualification spot, but their lead over Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen is now precarious.
According to post-match comments reported by Sportschau, Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß acknowledged the mixed feelings within his squad. "We would have liked to win and are disappointed with the result on one hand, but on the other hand we are happy about the point," Hoeneß said. The draw comes just three days after Stuttgart secured their place in the DFB-Pokal final, a potential distraction that may have contributed to a sluggish start against a determined Bremen side.
Werder Bremen, fighting to secure their top-flight status, started the brighter of the two teams and were rewarded when Jens Stage scored his tenth goal of the season with a low drive from the edge of the box. The Danish midfielder, who also scored a brace in the recent Nordderby win over Hamburg, continued his influential form. Stuttgart struggled to create clear chances in response, with Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus making a sharp save to deny Bilal El Khannouss in the first half.
The introduction of Demirovic in the 57th minute proved pivotal for the hosts. The Bosnian striker needed just four minutes to make his mark, powerfully meeting a cross from El Khannouss to nod home the leveler. His impact underscored his value as a clinical finisher, providing a timely contribution in the absence of the injured Serhou Guirassy. Despite increased pressure from Stuttgart thereafter, Bremen's defense, marshaled by Amos Pieper and backed by Backhaus, held firm to secure a valuable away point.
For Stuttgart, the focus now shifts to a critical final run-in. They face a direct clash with fifth-placed Hoffenheim next weekend, followed by a home match against sixth-placed Leverkusen. These head-to-head encounters will likely decide their Champions League fate. For Werder Bremen, the point edges them closer to mathematical safety, now sitting six points above the relegation play-off spot. Coach Daniel Thioune told Sportschau he viewed the draw as a "small success" and a potentially "very valuable point" in their survival bid.
