Sunderland have initiated contact with representatives for Red Bull Salzburg forward Kerim Alajbegovic, according to TEAMtalk. The Black Cats are looking to bolster their squad following a successful 2025/26 season that saw them secure a seventh-place finish in the Premier League and qualify for the Europa League for the first time in 53 years.
The 18-year-old Alajbegovic recently enjoyed a productive season with Salzburg, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists across all competitions. He is currently due to return to Bayer Leverkusen on July 1st, after the Bundesliga club activated an €8million (£6.9m / $9.2m) buy-back clause. However, his long-term future at Leverkusen is uncertain, with his current valuation estimated between €25-30million (£25.9m / $34.6m).
Alajbegovic is a versatile attacker capable of playing on either wing or as a second striker, adding to his appeal for Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris. The club are preparing for a busy summer transfer window as they aim to strengthen their squad for their European campaign. They have previously shown interest in Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, although multiple bids were rejected in January.
Sunderland face competition for Alajbegovic’s signature, with Serie A side Roma currently leading the chase. The Italian club have held talks and are considered hopeful of securing a deal, though no agreement has been reached. Interest from other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, has also been reported, but Sunderland are now seen as the frontrunners among English teams. Alajbegovic is expected to feature for Bosnia at the upcoming World Cup, potentially increasing his market value further. Leverkusen are open to offers should the right proposal emerge, despite hoping the player will integrate into their first team.
