Sunderland have initiated discussions with Roma regarding a potential transfer for forward Matias Soule, according to TEAMtalk. The Black Cats are reportedly prepared to offer around £30million (€35m / $40m) for the 23-year-old Argentina international.
Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is driving the pursuit of Soule, having previously signed him for Roma from Juventus in 2024. Ghisolfi is aiming to build on Sunderland’s impressive recruitment last summer as the club prepares for a season that includes European competition.
Soule’s representatives have indicated the player is open to a move to the Premier League, a development that has encouraged Sunderland to progress with negotiations. Roma are understood to be willing to allow Soule to depart this summer.
The versatile attacker is capable of playing across the entire front line and is seen as a valuable addition to Regis Le Bris’s squad. Sunderland have been able to generate transfer funds through the sales of Simon Adingra to Ivory Coast and Eliezer Mayenda to Rennes, easing potential financial concerns.
However, the club is mindful of adhering to UEFA and Premier League financial regulations as they continue to strengthen the team. Sunderland have also reaffirmed their commitment to retaining key players such as captain Granit Xhaka and midfielder Noah Sadiki, despite interest from other clubs.
Ghisolfi believes Soule’s existing relationship with him and Roma could facilitate a smoother transfer process. The move represents a significant statement of intent from Sunderland as they look to build on last season’s success and compete on multiple fronts.
