Sunderland's Roefs dismisses Chelsea transfer talk, pledges to Black Cats
Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs has moved to quash speculation linking him with a summer move to Chelsea, stating his happiness at the Stadium of Light. The 23-year-old Dutchman, who has kept nine clean sheets in 34 Premier League appearances this season, has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with reports suggesting a fee in the region of €70m could be involved. The Blues have been credited with a strong interest as they assess their long-term goalkeeping options, with Robert Sanchez's future uncertain and Mike Penders out on loan.
However, the Dutch shot-stopper has now publicly addressed the rumours for the first time, effectively ruling out a move. Speaking after Sunderland's 1-0 win over Tottenham, Roefs expressed his commitment to the Black Cats. "I'm just really happy with the trust I get from the team, from the coach," he told reporters. "I'm back, and everyone just supports me so well... What happens outside of that, I don't really feel any type of way about it."
Roefs, who only joined Sunderland from NEC Nijmegen last summer for a modest fee, has been a revelation in his debut Premier League season. His commanding performances have been central to Sunderland's impressive campaign, which sees them comfortably in the top half of the table. His form has naturally attracted attention, with Liverpool also linked with the keeper as a potential long-term successor to Alisson Becker.
When pressed specifically on the Chelsea links and the swirling transfer talk, Roefs was unequivocal in his commitment to his current club. "For me, it's not really time to think about these things like moving or any rumours," he stated. "As long as I don't know anything about it, I just keep on going." He went on to praise the project at Sunderland, adding, "The way we are building here is just really, really amazing."
The player's comments will be a significant boost to Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris, who will be eager to keep his star goalkeeper as the club looks to build on their impressive return to the top flight. Chelsea, meanwhile, will likely have to look elsewhere in their search for a new number one, with the 23-year-old Dutchman appearing to be off the market for the foreseeable future. Roefs' focus remains firmly on Wearside, where he is under contract until 2028, and on continuing Sunderland's positive trajectory under the current project.
