Manchester United’s pursuit of Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni may not be over despite the player recently signing a new contract with the Spanish club, extending his stay at the Estadio Bernabeu until 2031. According to reporter Andy Mitten, speaking on Talk of the Devils, Real Madrid could still be open to selling the 26-year-old this summer.
While Tchouameni committed his future to Madrid last week, Mitten revealed a source within the club indicated a sale remains a possibility. This echoes previous reporting from Graeme Bailey in April, who stated United had contacted the player’s representatives regarding a potential deal, and Fabrizio Romano’s claims that Tchouameni is a dream target for United’s new owners, INEOS. The new contract, however, initially appeared to end any speculation.
Tchouameni joined Real Madrid in 2022 from Monaco for a reported fee of around €80 million, quickly establishing himself as a key player in midfield. He has also become a regular feature in the French national team, currently participating in the 2026 World Cup. His ability to break up play and provide defensive stability would address a clear need in United’s midfield.
Mitten suggests that Real Madrid’s potential need to raise funds through player sales, coupled with the existing hierarchy within the squad, could lead to Tchouameni’s availability. Fede Valverde has been designated as the future captain, and selling Tchouameni would generate significant revenue. The reporter also noted that a potential sale is not about Tchouameni’s desire to leave, as he would be open to a move to Old Trafford if the circumstances change. The club are also planning a major overhaul of the squad with several high profile signings expected.
Despite the possibility, a transfer is considered improbable. Real Madrid view Tchouameni as a crucial component of their squad, particularly as he is the only dedicated defensive midfielder currently on their books. The club’s ambitions to compete for both LaLiga and the Champions League under their new manager, Jose Mourinho, further diminish the likelihood of losing such a key player.
