Bologna have announced the appointment of Domenico Tedesco as their new manager, with the Italian-German coach signing a contract with the club until 2028. The news was confirmed by Bologna on Tuesday, as Tedesco takes over from Vincenzo Italiano, who recently guided the club to their first trophy in 27 years – the 2025 Coppa Italia title.
Tedesco, 40, was born in Italy but moved to Germany at the age of two, and this appointment marks his first managerial role in his country of birth. He began his coaching career at Erzgebirge Aue in the German second division, and has since managed Schalke 04, Spartak Moscow, RB Leipzig, a spell in Belgium, and most recently Fenerbahçe during the 2025-2026 season.
The arrival of Tedesco represents something of a departure for Serie A, a league traditionally dominated by managers with extensive experience within Italy. His appointment has been described as unusual given the prevalence of domestically-trained coaches at the top level.
Italiano leaves Bologna having restored the club to prominence, culminating in their Coppa Italia victory. Tedesco now inherits a team on the rise, with expectations high following their recent success. The long-term nature of his contract suggests Bologna are looking to build a sustained period of success under his leadership, potentially challenging for European qualification in the coming seasons. This move could signal a shift in Bologna’s ambition, aiming to establish themselves as a consistent force in Serie A.
