Marc-André ter Stegen has agreed to a one-year loan deal with Ajax, according to reports in AS, after falling out of favour at FC Barcelona. The 34-year-old goalkeeper will leave the Camp Nou seeking regular first-team football following a period hampered by injuries and a loss of his starting position. Ter Stegen’s move comes after a previous unsuccessful loan spell at Girona during the January transfer window.
Barcelona confirmed the loan alongside the transfer of Inaki Pena to Panathinaïkos, signalling a clear shift in their goalkeeping hierarchy. Joan Garcia has established himself as the club’s first-choice keeper, displacing Ter Stegen last season. Pena served as Ter Stegen’s understudy during the 2024-2025 campaign, but will now pursue opportunities in Greece.
Ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, initially establishing himself as a key player for the Catalan giants. However, recurring back and hamstring injuries have significantly impacted his playing time in recent seasons. His loan to Girona saw him feature in only two matches, raising questions about his fitness and form.
At Ajax, Ter Stegen will reunite with Michel, his former manager at Girona, who recently took charge of the Dutch club. This connection is believed to have played a significant role in facilitating the move. Wojciech Szczesny is expected to become Barcelona’s backup goalkeeper behind Garcia, completing the reshuffle in the goalkeeping department. The move allows Ter Stegen a chance to rebuild his career and potentially return to Barcelona with renewed confidence, or secure a permanent transfer elsewhere.
This transfer signals Barcelona’s willingness to streamline their squad and provide opportunities for younger goalkeepers to develop, while also allowing a seasoned professional like Ter Stegen to regain his form and playing time.
