Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is reportedly set to join Ajax Amsterdam on a season-long loan, according to sources at AS. The potential move comes as Ajax seek to bolster their goalkeeping options ahead of the new Eredivisie campaign, while Ter Stegen looks for consistent first-team football.
Ter Stegen has been a mainstay for Barcelona since joining the club from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers. However, he has found his playing time somewhat limited in recent seasons, particularly with the emergence of other goalkeeping talents. He remains under contract with the Catalan club until 2028.
Last season, Barcelona had planned a loan spell for Ter Stegen at Girona to provide him with regular minutes, but an injury disrupted those plans. The current Ajax manager, Míchel, was in charge of Girona during that period and is known to be a strong admirer of the German international. Míchel’s recent appointment at Ajax is believed to be a significant factor in facilitating this potential transfer.
Ajax had also been in discussions with Inter Milan’s veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer, but those talks have reportedly stalled, with Sommer now nearing a move to Club Brugge. This shift in focus paved the way for renewed interest in Ter Stegen, offering him a clear path to becoming Ajax’s number one.
The loan move would allow Ter Stegen to play regularly in a competitive league and remain in peak condition, potentially benefiting both him and Barcelona. Should the transfer be completed, it would provide Ajax with a high-caliber goalkeeper and strengthen their position as contenders in the Eredivisie.
