Thiago Silva has received a contract offer from Chelsea days after departing Porto, according to reports from ESPN Brazil. The offer is not for a playing role, but would see the veteran defender transition into coaching within the club’s structure.
Silva previously spent four seasons at Chelsea, arriving initially on a one-year deal in 2020 and consistently earning extensions through strong performances into his late thirties. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he won the Champions League, solidifying his legacy with the club. His recent spells away from Chelsea have been short-lived, featuring two seasons at Fluminense and a brief 14-game stint with Porto.
While Chelsea are offering a coaching position, Silva also has options to continue playing. AC Milan, where he previously played 119 games and won Serie A, have reportedly offered him a one-year deal. Silva maintains a close friendship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now a senior advisor at Milan, which could influence his decision.
Chelsea had previously expressed interest in bringing Silva back to the club during the winter transfer window, when he was leaving Fluminense. At that time, a return to London was believed to be Silva’s preference, largely due to his family remaining in the area and his sons being part of the Chelsea academy. Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Fulham were also reportedly informed of his availability, but he ultimately chose to join Porto.
Chelsea’s interest in Silva extends beyond his playing ability, recognizing his potential as a coach, particularly given his family ties to the club. However, it remains to be seen whether the 39-year-old will choose to end his playing career or pursue another short-term contract, potentially with his former club AC Milan. His recent form at Porto, limited to just 14 appearances, may factor into his decision-making process.
Silva’s potential move into coaching at Chelsea could provide valuable experience to the club’s younger players, while a return to Milan would allow him to finish his career at a club where he is highly regarded.
