Stade Rennais have announced the signing of Adrien Thomasson from RC Lens, effective immediately. The 32-year-old midfielder joins the Breton club on a free transfer, having seen his contract with Lens expire. Thomasson has signed a three-year deal with Rennes, committing him to the club until 2029.
Thomasson departs Lens after three seasons with the club, during which he captained the side and lifted the Coupe de France last weekend. He bid farewell to the club and its supporters via social media prior to the official announcement. The move represents a significant addition for Rennes, who will compete in the Europa League next season, while Lens qualified for the Champions League.
According to reports, Thomasson chose Rennes due to a more lucrative salary offer compared to remaining at Lens. He becomes Rennes’ first confirmed summer signing, with the club’s sporting director, Loïc Désiré, and owner, François-Henri Pinault, having publicly discussed their interest in acquiring him in recent weeks. Thomasson’s arrival is expected to bolster Rennes’ midfield options.
Throughout his career, Thomasson has played for several French clubs, including Évian Thonon Gaillard, Nantes, and Strasbourg, in addition to his three years at Lens. He is known for his versatility and ability to contribute both goals and assists. Last season, he was a key performer for Lens, leading the team in both goals and assists, solidifying his reputation as a consistent performer in Ligue 1. His experience and leadership qualities will be valuable assets for Rennes as they aim to compete at the highest level. This transfer allows Rennes to strengthen their squad with a proven Ligue 1 player, while Thomasson gains a new challenge and financial reward.
