Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries fire Inter to dramatic comeback win over Como
Inter Milan staged a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Como 4-3 in a Serie A thriller at the Sinigaglia, with Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries scoring braces to maintain their nine-point lead at the top of the table. The victory moves Inter to the brink of a 21st Scudetto, with the club needing just a few more points to mathematically secure the title.
Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, dominated the first half. They took a deserved lead after 36 minutes when Alex Valle, on loan from Barcelona, finished from close range after a flowing team move. The home side doubled their advantage just before half-time when Nico Paz latched onto a long ball from goalkeeper Bento to finish coolly, capitalising on a defensive error and a moment of hesitation from Inter's Yann Sommer.
Facing a 2-0 deficit at the break, Inter manager Cristian Chivu made a decisive change, bringing on Carlos Augusto for the second half. The substitution paid immediate dividends. In first-half stoppage time, Nicolo Barella found space on the right and delivered a cross that Marcus Thuram converted to ignite the comeback. The French striker then drew the champions level shortly after the restart, capitalising on a catastrophic defensive mix-up between Como's Sebastiaan Bornauw and Ignace van der Brempt to lob the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper, Bento.
The comeback was completed by two goals from wing-back Denzel Dumfries. The Dutchman, who had not scored in Serie A since August, rose to meet a corner to make it 3-2 before adding a spectacular second, volleying home a cross from Manuel Akanji to complete a remarkable turnaround. Como's Da Cunha scored a late penalty to set up a tense finish, but Inter held on for a crucial victory. The win puts Inter within touching distance of the Scudetto, while Como's Champions League hopes were dealt a significant blow.
