Toma Basic has completed a move to Serie A newcomers Venezia after his contract with Lazio expired, the club confirmed on Friday. The Croatian midfielder joins the Venetian side on a free transfer, seeking regular first-team football after a period of fluctuating involvement in Rome.
Basic initially faced an uncertain future at Lazio, being left out of the squad by manager Maurizio Sarri during the 2022-23 season. However, he was reintegrated into the team last season and became a regular starter in midfield, demonstrating resilience and earning praise from Sarri. He notably scored a winning goal against Juventus during the campaign.
Across his time in Italy’s top flight, Basic has made 92 Serie A appearances, scoring three goals and providing five assists. Prior to joining Lazio, the 27-year-old spent two seasons in Ligue 1 with Bordeaux, where he established himself as a key player, registering seven goals and five assists in 75 league games. His performances in France initially brought him to the attention of Serie A clubs.
Venezia manager Paolo Stroppa is reportedly a long-time admirer of Basic, having previously attempted to sign him during his time at Cremonese two years ago. Stroppa highlighted Basic’s technical ability and knowledge of the game, expressing his delight at securing his signature. He anticipates Basic will be a key figure in midfield, operating as a dynamic mezzala and contributing to attacking movements.
According to Fantacampionato Gazzetta, Basic is valued at 18 credits in their fantasy football game. Last season, he achieved a fantasy football average of 6.3, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 23 league appearances. He is considered a potentially valuable low-cost option for fantasy football managers. The arrival of Basic adds experience and quality to Venezia’s midfield as they aim to establish themselves in Serie A.
