Sandro Tonali is set to join Tottenham Hotspur from Newcastle United in a deal worth £92.5 million, with an additional £7.5 million in potential add-ons, bringing the total package to £100 million. The 26-year-old is currently travelling to England to undergo a medical examination before the transfer is officially confirmed. The move comes after Tonali indicated his desire to leave Newcastle following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
Tottenham have been active in the transfer window, already securing the services of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Mateus Fernandes for a club-record £85 million. Manager Roberto De Zerbi specifically requested reinforcements in central midfield, leading to the pursuit of Tonali and Fernandes. The acquisition of Tonali represents a significant coup for Spurs, beating out competition from Manchester City.
Tonali spoke to Sky Sport Italia about his departure from Newcastle, stating that the split was amicable and that both parties sought the best outcome. He emphasized De Zerbi’s influence in his decision, citing a combination of professional and personal factors. “De Zerbi played a huge role in this, and it’s also a lifestyle and family choice after three years at Newcastle,” Tonali explained. His comments may draw criticism from Newcastle supporters, given his swift departure and move to a direct rival.
Newcastle have already seen Alexander Isak join Liverpool and Anthony Gordon move to Barcelona in recent windows, raising concerns among fans about a potential exodus of key players. Tonali’s exit further fuels those anxieties. Tottenham, meanwhile, are not stopping with Tonali and Fernandes, with Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi emerging as a key target. De Zerbi reportedly views the 19-year-old as a long-term solution at striker and is prepared to offer £80 million, despite previous valuations of £100 million. Kroupi enjoyed a breakout season with Bournemouth, scoring 13 Premier League goals. The club is also reportedly in talks for another Portuguese player to join Fernandes.
