Sandro Tonali has completed a move from Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur, signing a six-year contract with the London club. The transfer, which is reportedly worth £92.5 million plus potential £7.5 million in bonuses, makes Tonali one of the most expensive signings in English football history.
The move sees Tonali reunite with manager Roberto De Zerbi, having spoken extensively about the club's project and the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tonali expressed his excitement at joining the club, stating he felt “estasiated” upon arrival and quickly understood it was the right move for him. He also highlighted the passionate fanbase and looked forward to starting the season.
Tonali arrived at Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for a fee of around £60 million, but has quickly moved on after just one season with the Magpies. He made 34 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, contributing four goals and providing assists. Prior to his move to England, Tonali established himself as a key player for Milan, helping them win the Serie A title in 2022 and reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2023.
Tottenham Hotspur’s sporting director, Johan Lange, described Tonali as “one of the best midfielders in Europe,” praising his technical ability, intelligence, and character. De Zerbi also expressed his delight at securing the signing, noting he had followed Tonali’s career since his youth days at Brescia and was impressed by the player’s clear desire to join Tottenham. The Italian international will earn approximately €12 million net per season.
This significant investment signals Tottenham’s ambition to return to the top of the Premier League, with Tonali expected to be a central figure in De Zerbi’s midfield. The transfer also represents a substantial profit for Newcastle, who have quickly moved on a player they signed for a significant fee just twelve months ago.
