Tottenham Hotspur are set to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a reported fee of £100million, with the deal now poised to be completed following Newcastle’s announcement of the signing of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim.
Newcastle officially announced the £43million capture of Ivory Coast winger Toure on Friday, a move that will immediately facilitate Tonali’s transfer to Spurs. The delay in formally confirming Tonali’s move had been attributed to Newcastle’s desire to first secure a replacement in attack, following Anthony Gordon’s transfer to Barcelona.
Tonali underwent a medical in London on Thursday ahead of the record-breaking transfer, and has reportedly spoken positively about the influence of Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi in his decision to move to the North London club. The Italy international midfielder will join Spurs as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.
Toure arrives at St James’ Park after a single season in the Bundesliga, where he scored five goals and provided 12 assists for Hoffenheim. The 20-year-old’s arrival is intended to offset the departure of Gordon, though the Magpies will be hoping Toure can replicate the goalscoring form of the former Everton winger, who scored 17 goals in all competitions last season.
The transfer of Tonali represents a significant outlay for Tottenham, and signals their ambition to compete at the highest level. The move allows Newcastle to reinvest funds and continue their own squad building plans under Eddie Howe. This deal could reshape the midfield dynamics for both clubs as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
