Dino Toppmöller is poised to become the new manager of RC Lens, according to reports from L’Équipe. The German coach is nearing an agreement with the club’s hierarchy, succeeding Pierre Sage who is reportedly close to joining Crystal Palace. This development appears to end Lens’ pursuit of Olivier Pantaloni, who recently departed from Lorient.
Toppmöller, 45, most recently managed Eintracht Frankfurt, where he was dismissed earlier this January. Prior to that, he built a solid coaching resume, following in the footsteps of his father, Klaus Toppmöller, a former player and manager for Bayer Leverkusen, including their 2002 Champions League final appearance. Toppmöller himself had a modest playing career as a forward before transitioning into coaching roles at Dudelange in Luxembourg, and later as an assistant at RB Leipzig.
His two seasons at Eintracht Frankfurt saw him oversee the development of players such as Randal Kolo Muani, Hugo Ékitiké, and Willian Pacho. He also spent two years as an assistant to Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich, gaining experience at one of Europe’s elite clubs. This experience is likely a key factor in Lens’ decision to appoint him.
The appointment of Toppmöller represents a proactive move by Lens following Sage’s expected departure. Lens finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season, missing out on European qualification, and will be hoping Toppmöller can guide them back into contention. His tactical acumen and experience working with promising young players could prove vital as the club looks to build for the future.
