Barcelona's Torres Ends Goal Drought in Crucial Derby Win
Barcelona forward Ferran Torres ended a 16-game goal drought with a brace in a 4-1 victory over local rivals Espanyol, a result that moves the Catalans a significant step closer to the La Liga title. The win, secured with late goals from Lamine Yamal and substitute Marcus Rashford, extends Barcelona's lead at the top of the table.
Ferran Torres was the catalyst for the victory, breaking the deadlock in the 9th minute before adding a second goal on 25 minutes, his first goals in any competition since January. The Spanish international's double, which came either side of a Lamine Yamal assist, provided a much-needed confidence boost for the 24-year-old, whose form had dipped in recent months.
The home side's performance was not without its difficulties. Despite Torres's early double, Espanyol fought back after the break, with Pol Lozano pulling a goal back in the 56th minute to set up a tense finale. Barcelona's defense, which has been a point of strength this season, was finally breached, and the visitors grew in confidence as the second half progressed.
However, the introduction of substitutes Rashford and Frenkie de Jong proved decisive. With Espanyol pushing for an equalizer, the Catalans struck twice on the counter-attack in the final minutes. Lamine Yamal, who had provided the assist for Torres's second, scored a solo effort in the 87th minute to seal the points. Just two minutes later, a long pass from De Jong found Rashford, who calmly finished to make the final score 4-1.
The victory, achieved in front of a home crowd at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, puts significant pressure on Barcelona's title rivals. Manager Hansi Flick will be particularly pleased with the impact of his substitutes and the return to scoring form of Torres, whose goals were his first in La Liga since November. The win in the Catalan derby not only secures local bragging rights but also represents a potentially decisive step towards the La Liga title, with Barcelona now needing just a handful of points from their remaining fixtures.
