Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported fee of £52 million, approximately €60 million. The club confirmed the deal, stating it is a long-term contract, though the exact duration was not disclosed. This marks Tottenham’s third major signing of the transfer window as they continue to rebuild their squad.
Van Hecke, a 26-year-old Netherlands international, previously worked with Tottenham’s new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, at Brighton between 2022 and 2024. The defender expressed his excitement about reuniting with the Italian coach, stating he already has an “excellent relationship” with him and is eager to begin working together again. He also mentioned receiving positive feedback about the club from Micky van de Ven, another Tottenham defender.
The move for Van Hecke comes after Tottenham secured the signing of Van de Ven earlier in the window, indicating a clear focus on strengthening their defensive options. Last season was a challenging one for Spurs, and the club is clearly aiming to address vulnerabilities at the back. Brighton signed Van Hecke in 2020, and he has become a key player for them, making 47 appearances across all competitions.
Van Hecke’s arrival provides Tottenham with additional depth and competition in central defence, potentially forming a strong partnership with Van de Ven. The significant investment in the defender signals the club’s ambition to compete at the highest level and build a solid foundation for future success. De Zerbi’s familiarity with the player should also facilitate a swift integration into the team and tactical system. The signing could allow Tottenham to challenge for a Champions League spot next season.
