Tottenham Hotspur are continuing negotiations with Brighton and Hove Albion for defender Jan Paul van Hecke, despite an initial bid being rejected, according to transfer insider David Ornstein. The move comes as Spurs seek to bolster their defensive options following a season where they conceded 122 goals in 76 Premier League matches.
The need for defensive reinforcements is further heightened by uncertainty surrounding the futures of current players, with captain Cristian Romero reportedly pushing for a move to Atletico Madrid and doubts lingering over Micky van de Ven’s long-term commitment. Manager Roberto De Zerbi has identified strengthening the centre-back position as a major priority, with Marcos Senesi also a target.
De Zerbi is known to be a strong admirer of Van Hecke, having previously managed the player during his time at Brighton between 2022 and 2024. The 25-year-old Netherlands international flourished under De Zerbi’s tactical approach and is familiar with the demands of playing for the Italian coach. Van Hecke’s contract with Brighton is set to expire in the summer of 2027, making him a viable transfer target this summer.
Van Hecke joined Brighton from NAC Breda in 2020, gaining valuable experience through loan spells at Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers before establishing himself as a key player for the Seagulls. He has made 131 appearances for Brighton, including 106 in the Premier League, and started 36 league games last season, missing only two through injury. This durability is seen as a significant asset for a Spurs side that has struggled with injuries in recent years.
Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro believes Van Hecke is ready to make an immediate impact in north London, praising his maturity and experience playing under De Zerbi. The potential arrival of Van Hecke would provide competition and a natural replacement for Romero on the right side of central defence, alongside Van de Ven or Senesi. He also offers tactical flexibility, being capable of playing in a back three.
