Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a bid for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, with Roberto De Zerbi identified the 23-year-old as a key target should Guglielmo Vicario leave the club this summer. The potential move comes as Spurs continue to reshape their squad under the new manager.
Trafford impressed during his time at Burnley and has continued to develop within the England national team setup, establishing himself as a reliable option in goal. De Zerbi reportedly believes Trafford’s skillset aligns with his possession-based tactical approach, making him an ideal replacement for Vicario if the Italian departs north London.
Should a deal materialize, Trafford would likely become Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper, moving ahead of Antonin Kinsky, who unexpectedly reclaimed the number one spot last season following Vicario’s hernia surgery. Kinsky’s resurgence, after being substituted after just 17 minutes in a match against Atletico Madrid, proved crucial in securing Premier League football for Spurs.
However, Tottenham face competition from several other Premier League clubs for Trafford’s signature. Aston Villa are also keenly interested, particularly if Emiliano Martínez joins Juventus, while Newcastle United retain long-standing interest, though a move depends on outgoings. Leeds United have also registered interest, but have yet to make a formal offer.
Manchester City are expected to demand a fee in excess of £40 million for Trafford, who is contracted at the Etihad Stadium until 2029. The club paid £30 million to re-sign him from Burnley in 2025, and have reportedly informed the player he is free to seek a move this summer if a suitable offer arrives. Trafford himself is reportedly eager for regular first-team football, increasing the likelihood of a summer transfer.
With multiple clubs vying for his services, Trafford’s next destination remains uncertain, but his desire for consistent playing time suggests he will seek a club where he is guaranteed a starting role.
