Tottenham Hotspur have been the most active major club in the early stages of the summer transfer window, spending a significant sum to revamp their squad. The club has secured the services of Dutch defender Jean Paul Van Hecke from Brighton for a reported fee of €60 million, Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for €108 million, and Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for €99 million, according to L’Équipe.
This substantial outlay contrasts with a generally cautious approach from other top European clubs thus far. While other Premier League teams have made moves, none have reached the same level of expenditure as Tottenham. Chelsea have spent €57 million on right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta, and Newcastle United have acquired goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims for €28.5 million, a record fee for a player from Ligue 2. Arsenal have exercised their option to purchase Piero Hincapié for approximately €40 million. Manchester City have also made a significant investment, spending €135 million on Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, making it the third-most expensive transfer in Premier League history.
In Spain, Real Madrid has been the most active, bringing in Denzel Dumfries (€20 million from Inter Milan), Ibrahima Konaté (free transfer from Liverpool), Bernardo Silva (free transfer from Manchester City), and Marc Cucurella (€60 million from Chelsea). Barcelona have spent €80 million to secure Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. Atlético Madrid have added Alejandro Grimaldo to their ranks for €20 million from Leverkusen.
Serie A has seen fewer high-profile moves, though AC Milan completed a notable deal for Gonçalo Ramos, spending €74 million to bring him in from Paris Saint-Germain. Inter Milan have signed Aleksandar Stankovic, son of Dejan Stankovic, from Bruges for €20 million. In Germany, Bayern Munich have invested in Nathaniel Brown (€50 million from Frankfurt) and Ismael Saibari (€50 million from PSV). Borussia Dortmund have signed French defender Joane Gadou from Salzburg, while Bayer Leverkusen have secured the signature of Kerim Alajbegovic, who impressed at the World Cup with Bosnia.
Tottenham’s significant investment signals a clear ambition under their new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for top honors. The influx of talent across multiple positions suggests a desire for a comprehensive overhaul and a distinct tactical shift.
