Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to consider offers for captain Cristian Romero this summer, with intermediaries working to facilitate a potential exit, according to TEAMtalk. The Argentina international’s future at the club has become uncertain following a period of strained relations internally.
Romero has been sidelined since April with a knee injury, though he hopes to recover in time for Argentina’s participation in the upcoming World Cup. Controversy arose recently when Romero chose to return to Argentina to attend a match for his boyhood club Belgrano, rather than remain in England for Tottenham’s crucial Premier League fixture against Everton.
While Tottenham publicly refrained from criticizing the defender, sources indicate internal dissatisfaction with the decision, particularly given the importance of the match in Tottenham’s fight to avoid relegation. Romero subsequently returned to London for the end-of-season fixture after internal pressure was relayed to him.
Despite signing a new long-term contract last summer, Tottenham are now open to a sale if their valuation is met. Intermediaries have begun exploring potential destinations, with Atletico Madrid emerging as a strong candidate. Diego Simeone is known to admire Romero’s aggressive defensive style, leadership, and experience.
TEAMtalk reports that a move to Atletico would be Romero’s preferred outcome should he leave Tottenham, attracted by the club’s intensity, competitive spirit, and existing Argentine contingent. No formal agreement is currently in place, and Tottenham are expected to demand a substantial fee. However, with tensions rising and Atletico’s interest firming, the possibility of Romero departing this summer is increasing.
