Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to compete with Liverpool for the signature of Atletico Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri during the current transfer window. The development comes despite Tottenham recently bolstering their defensive options with the arrivals of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Spurs have been particularly active this summer, breaking their transfer record twice for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, aiming to strengthen their midfield under Roberto De Zerbi. Currently, the club’s focus is on adding attacking reinforcements, specifically a left-winger and a new striker.
A report from Italy, cited by TEAMtalk, suggests Tottenham are now considering a move for Ruggeri, who was a regular starter for Diego Simeone’s Atletico last season, providing seven assists in 47 appearances. Interest from Liverpool is unsurprising, following Robertson’s departure and their ongoing search for competition for Milos Kerkez.
The potential move for Ruggeri could be linked to speculation surrounding Destiny Udogie, with Italian clubs reportedly interested in bringing him back to Serie A. Furthermore, with several clubs, including Manchester United, also monitoring Djed Spence’s situation, a move for Ruggeri appears increasingly plausible.
Ruggeri, a former Italy Under-21 international, is considered to be at the peak of his powers, making a potential sale from Atletico somewhat unexpected. While a specific fee has not been disclosed, his current market value is estimated at €28m (£24m / $32m) by Transfermarkt, though this may prove to be an undervaluation given his importance to Atletico.
Atletico may be willing to consider a sale to raise funds for their own transfer targets, with a continued interest in Tottenham captain Cristian Romero. While Liverpool would appear to be a more natural fit, the situation could develop into a competitive pursuit between the two Premier League clubs.
