Scott McTominay has completed a permanent transfer to Napoli for a fee of €50 million, providing Manchester United with a significant financial boost this summer. The move comes after the 29-year-old secured Champions League qualification for Napoli with a goal in a 3-0 win over Pisa on Sunday.
McTominay initially joined Manchester United’s academy at the age of six and went on to make over 250 appearances for the club before moving to Italy in 2024 for €30.5 million. He quickly established himself as a key player for Napoli, winning the Serie A MVP award in his debut season after leading the club to the league title.
This season, McTominay has continued to impress, scoring ten goals in Serie A, including the crucial goal against Pisa. His performances have not only benefited Napoli but also triggered a clause in Rasmus Hojlund’s loan deal from United. Hojlund’s loan has now become a permanent move, netting the Red Devils an additional €44 million.
Napoli had already paid €6 million for Hojlund’s initial loan spell, and the 23-year-old has flourished in Italy after struggling to adapt to the Premier League following an €80 million transfer from Atalanta in 2023. Hojlund scored only four goals during his two years at United but has become a vital player for Napoli, contributing 11 goals in Serie A this season and assisting McTominay’s recent goal. He has signed a contract with Napoli until 2030, including an €85 million release clause valid from next summer.
The financial injection from the sales of McTominay and Hojlund will be crucial for Manchester United as they look to support new permanent coach Michael Carrick in the upcoming transfer window. The club is also currently negotiating with Barcelona regarding a permanent deal for Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan, and these sales would provide a much-needed windfall to fund their ambitions.
