Alessio Romagnoli’s proposed transfer to Al Sadd is currently stalled due to a disagreement over payment terms, leading Lazio to recall the defender to begin pre-season training. The situation is described as ‘surreal’ by Italian journalists, as Romagnoli had already agreed personal terms with the Qatari club for a three-year contract worth €6 million per season.
Lazio initially agreed to a €3 million fee for the permanent transfer of Romagnoli, expecting immediate payment. However, Al Sadd have now requested a revised payment schedule, proposing to begin payments in January 2027. This request stems from financial restrictions imposed in Qatar due to ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf, limiting international money transfers. Lazio president Claudio Lotito has reportedly rejected this proposal outright, stating the original terms must be met for the deal to proceed.
As a result of the impasse, Romagnoli has been summoned to Formello to undergo medical examinations and could join the Lazio squad at their training camp as early as tomorrow. Despite this, the player’s representatives are continuing to explore options to salvage the transfer to Al Sadd. The club are firm in their position, and consider the deal to be effectively collapsed unless Al Sadd reverts to the original payment agreement.
Lazio’s plans for defensive reinforcements are currently on hold pending a resolution to Romagnoli’s situation. The club are considering several alternatives, including Spanish defender Dominguez and Italian player Comuzzo. Fiorentina’s Lucas Martinez Moreno is also of interest, but his high cost presents a significant obstacle. Romagnoli remains under contract with Lazio for another year, and his future at the club will depend on whether a new agreement can be reached with Al Sadd or if other potential buyers emerge.
