Kieran Trippier is set to join Wolverhampton after his contract with Newcastle United expires, according to Sky Sports. The 33-year-old right-back has verbally agreed to a move to Molineux on a free transfer, bringing an end to his four-and-a-half-year spell with the Magpies.
The deal will see Trippier sign a two-year contract with Wolverhampton, with the option of a further year, as the club looks to build for an immediate return to the Premier League. Trippier has 54 caps for England and brings significant experience to a side recently relegated from the top flight.
Wolverhampton finished as the bottom club in the Premier League this past season, ending an eight-year run in the top division. Manager Rob Edwards views Trippier as a key figure who can provide leadership and quality as they aim to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt. His set-piece ability will be a particular asset.
Trippier joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, playing a vital role in their resurgence under Eddie Howe. He contributed significantly to Newcastle’s qualification for the Champions League, but with his contract expiring, a move away became increasingly likely. He departs St. James’ Park having made a positive impact both on and off the pitch.
The addition of Trippier represents a significant coup for Wolverhampton as they prepare for a challenging Championship season. His experience and quality will be invaluable as they navigate the demands of the second tier, and his arrival signals their ambition to return to the Premier League quickly.
