Matt Turner will remain with the New England Revolution until at least December 31, 2026, after the MLS club reached an agreement with Olympique Lyonnais to extend the goalkeeper’s loan spell. The New England Revolution will then have the option to extend the loan through December 31, 2027, and subsequently purchase Turner outright, the club confirmed in a statement on Monday.
The extended loan arrangement comes after Turner joined Lyon in the summer of 2025 but was immediately loaned to New England. The move followed the departure of John Textor from his role at Lyon, leading to a reassessment of the club’s squad and Turner not factoring into their plans. The 32-year-old has yet to make an appearance for the French club.
Turner has earned 55 caps for the United States national team, most recently featuring in their 3-2 defeat against Turkey at the 2026 World Cup. Prior to his move to Europe, Turner established himself as a prominent goalkeeper in MLS, initially with the New England Revolution before a transfer to Nottingham Forest in 2023. He quickly became a key player for Forest, making 31 Premier League appearances during the 2023-24 season.
The decision to extend the loan benefits both clubs and the player. Lyon avoids the need to integrate a goalkeeper who doesn’t fit their current project, while Turner gains continued playing time in a familiar environment. New England secures a proven MLS goalkeeper, bolstering their squad for the upcoming seasons. This arrangement provides Turner with stability and the opportunity to remain a key figure for the national team as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
