Udinese have completed the signing of Unai Gomez from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, the club confirmed on Friday. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has signed a contract with the Serie A outfit that runs until June 30, 2031. Gomez departs Athletic Bilbao after making 117 appearances for the first team, scoring six goals and providing five assists.
Gomez progressed through the youth ranks at Athletic Bilbao, becoming a regular member of the senior squad in recent seasons. However, his goalscoring form dipped in the most recent campaign, where he registered just one goal in 26 Liga appearances. He has also represented Spain at the Under 21 level, gaining international experience.
The move to Udinese represents Gomez’s first experience playing outside of Spain, and he will be expected to contribute to the team’s attacking options. Udinese are looking to bolster their midfield following the departure of Atta to Fiorentina, and see Gomez as a potentially ideal replacement, citing his versatility as a key attribute. He is capable of playing as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger, or even as a supporting forward.
While not as technically gifted as some, Gomez is described as a physically dynamic player with good movement and passing ability.
