Manchester United’s summer transfer window has hit a significant snag with the news that midfielder Manuel Ugarte has suffered a ruptured ACL while playing for Uruguay at the 2026 World Cup. The injury, described by Ugarte as “the most serious a footballer can face,” effectively ends any prospect of him leaving Old Trafford during this transfer window.
United had been hoping to generate around €30 million from the sale of Ugarte, who has struggled for playing time since Michael Carrick became manager in January, making only 154 minutes of appearances. Interest had been reported from clubs such as Juventus and Galatasaray, but those potential moves are now off the table. The club had anticipated using the funds from a sale to supplement their transfer budget as they look to overhaul the squad.
Ugarte shared a message on social media detailing his devastation, expressing gratitude to Uruguay and Manchester United for their support. He vowed to return stronger after a lengthy rehabilitation period. The 25-year-old joined United last season but failed to establish himself as a regular starter under Carrick.
Despite this setback, reports from the Daily Mail suggest that Ugarte’s injury is “unlikely” to derail United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, for whom a €45 million deal is reportedly agreed, pending official confirmation. They remain hopeful of also signing Mateus Fernandes, though West Ham are seeking a fee of around €100 million. However, the club may now find it difficult to add a third midfielder without raising additional funds.
United have already seen Casemiro depart on a free transfer, and were initially planning for up to three midfield reinforcements. They are also looking to raise funds through the potential sales of Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana, who both spent last season on loan, as well as fringe players like Altay Bayindir and Joshua Zirkzee. Rasmus Hojlund has already completed a permanent move to Napoli. Former manager Ruben Amorim, now at Milan, is also believed to be interested in Mason Mount. The injury to Ugarte will force United to reassess their financial strategy as they navigate a busy transfer window.
