Man charged with fraud after impersonating Alexandre Lacazette
A man has been charged with fraud after allegedly impersonating Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette to claim approximately 200,000 euros in fraudulent benefits. According to a report in Le Parisien, the individual, aged around forty, used fake identity documents in the French international's name to file false claims with the Caisse nationale des allocations familiales (CAF), France's family allowance fund. The impersonation was uncovered during routine checks by the CAF in Nice, leading to the man's arrest. The public prosecutor has reportedly requested a five-year prison sentence for the offence.
The case came to light when the man visited a CAF office in Nice to complain about the suspension of his RSA income support. His presence at the office triggered the verification checks that exposed the fraud. This incident forms part of a wider crackdown on benefit fraud, with the CAF having identified over 29.2 million euros in fraudulent claims during 2025, according to the same report.
Alexandre Lacazette, the player whose identity was stolen, is currently the captain of Olympique Lyonnais. The 33-year-old forward returned to his boyhood club in 2022 after a five-year spell with Arsenal in the Premier League. There is no suggestion that Lacazette or his representatives were involved in or had any knowledge of the fraudulent activity. The incident appears to be a case of criminal identity theft, with the fraudster capitalising on the high profile of a professional footballer to bypass administrative checks.
The case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by government agencies in preventing sophisticated identity fraud. It also highlights the vulnerability of public figures to having their personal details misused for criminal gain, even when they are not directly targeted. For Lacazette, the matter is an off-field distraction as he focuses on Lyon's campaign in Ligue 1, where he remains a key figure in attack. The legal proceedings against the accused are now underway, separate from the footballer's own career and commitments.
