- FC Union Berlin have identified FC Thun coach Mauro Lustrinelli as their preferred candidate to become the club’s new head coach, according to reports in Germany. The news comes after Marie-Louise Eta was confirmed as the head coach of Union Berlin’s women’s team, following a successful spell as interim coach of the men’s side.
Bild newspaper reports that Union are currently in discussions with the 50-year-old Lustrinelli and are leading the race for his signature, with other clubs also expressing interest. Securing Lustrinelli’s services will require Union to come to an agreement with FC Thun, where the coach is currently under contract until 2028.
Lustrinelli has enjoyed a successful managerial career to date, most notably leading FC Thun to their first Swiss championship title during the 2025/26 season. Details regarding potential compensation for Thun, or the terms of a potential contract with Union Berlin, have not yet been disclosed.
Union Berlin are seeking a permanent replacement after a period of instability in their managerial position. The club narrowly avoided relegation from the Bundesliga last season, finishing just above the drop zone, and will be hoping a new appointment can bring greater consistency and success. Lustrinelli’s track record of building a winning team in Switzerland could prove appealing as Union look to establish themselves as a stable Bundesliga side.
The appointment of Lustrinelli would signal a shift in direction for Union Berlin, bringing in a coach with experience in a different European footballing environment. His success with Thun demonstrates an ability to develop a cohesive and competitive squad, which could be valuable as Union navigate the challenges of the Bundesliga.
