AC Milan are reportedly showing strong interest in Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, with officials from the Italian club in agreement over a potential transfer, according to reports in Italy. This comes as Liverpool are seemingly preparing for a period of transition, having already seen Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson depart on free transfers this summer, with Ibrahima Konate also leaving after failing to agree new terms.
Van Dijk, along with Alisson Becker, are among the remaining experienced players whose futures are under consideration by Liverpool, both being over the age of 30. While both players could be offered moves to the Saudi Pro League, Serie A also appears to be a destination, with Juventus also expressing interest in Alisson and reportedly agreeing personal terms with the Brazilian goalkeeper, though a deal is currently stalled due to Liverpool’s reluctance to sell this summer.
Davide Chinellato, a correspondent for Gazzetta dello Sport, highlighted Van Dijk’s potential impact at Milan, stating he is “a more physically fit player than Modric” and “still has a lot to give.” Gerry Cardinale, the controlling owner of both AC Milan and Toulouse, and an investor in Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group, is believed to be a key driver behind the interest in the Dutch centre-back, with new Milan manager Ruben Amorim also reportedly requesting his signing.
Agent David Lavelle suggested that Liverpool may be more open to departures than previously indicated, noting the change in management with the arrival of Arnie Iraola and the expiring contract of Alisson. Lavelle claimed Alisson has a personal agreement with Juventus, valued around €15 million. Sources indicate that Liverpool are no longer considering Van Dijk untouchable and would evaluate any serious offers received for the veteran defender. Any potential move to Milan would require a compelling financial package. The situation creates a potential for a multi-club transfer scenario, given Cardinale’s ownership stake in both clubs.
