Venezia's 22-year-old midfielder Issa Doumbia is the subject of intense transfer interest from clubs across Europe following a standout season in Serie B. According to reports from Italy, the Ivorian-born, Italian-raised player has been scouted by clubs including Club Brugge, Celtic, Espanyol, Southampton, and Sporting CP, as well as several top Italian sides. Doumbia's current club is reportedly determined to retain him, with manager Giovanni Stroppa joking that an offer of 15 million euros "is not enough" to secure his signature.
Doumbia has been instrumental in Venezia's push for promotion to Serie A, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in 33 league appearances this campaign. His latest goal sealed a 2-0 win over Empoli, putting Venezia on the brink of securing a top-flight return. His explosive form represents a significant step up from his debut Serie A season last year, where he earned eight starts and a call-up to the Italy Under-21 national team.
The midfielder joined Venezia from AlbinoLeffe in Serie C two summers ago for a fee of one million euros plus bonuses, signing a long-term contract that runs until June 2029. Sporting director Filippo Antonelli secured the deal ahead of competition from Atalanta, Juventus, Monza, and Catanzaro. Under the guidance of former manager Eusebio Di Francesco and current boss Stroppa, Doumbia has developed into a dynamic box-to-box midfielder, noted for his aggressive ball-winning, powerful runs, and timing of his arrivals in the penalty area.
Stroppa, who works with the player daily, has been vocal about his potential. "He has the ability to make the difference in his locker," the coach said after the recent Empoli victory. While acknowledging room for improvement in certain defensive and offensive reads, Stroppa's comments underscore the player's rapid development from a prospect to a pivotal first-team figure.
Doumbia's journey began at AlbinoLeffe, where he progressed through the youth academy alongside friend Mohamed Ali Zoma, now at Nuremberg. His roots in the game are family-oriented, having inherited a passion for football from his father, a truck driver. His current form has not only propelled his club but has firmly placed him on the radar of Europe's elite. With Venezia poised for promotion, the club faces a crucial summer decision: to cash in on their prized asset or build their Serie A project around one of their most valuable talents.
