Fábio Vieira is expected to complete a permanent transfer to Hamburger SV after indicating his desire to return to the Bundesliga club, according to the Hamburger Abendblatt. The Portuguese midfielder spent last season on loan with HSV, scoring seven goals and providing six assists. A deal now hinges on reaching an agreement between HSV and Arsenal regarding a transfer fee.
HSV initially held a purchase option of €22million, but that clause has now expired, leaving the clubs to negotiate a new fee. Arsenal are now reportedly open to a sale for between €10-15million, a significant reduction from their previous valuation. However, HSV are hesitant to exceed a single-digit million euro offer for the 24-year-old playmaker.
The Bundesliga 2 side are carefully assessing their financial capabilities and weighing the investment in Vieira against other potential squad reinforcements. Club officials are mindful of committing a substantial portion of their transfer budget to a single player, particularly with Vieira having only one year remaining on his contract at the Emirates Stadium.
Vieira joined Arsenal from FC Porto in 2022, but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Mikel Arteta, making only a handful of Premier League appearances. The loan spell at HSV proved fruitful, with the left-footed midfielder becoming a key component of Tim Walter’s side and demonstrating his creative abilities in a more prominent role. Should an agreement be reached, HSV have already prepared a four-year contract for Vieira, signalling their long-term faith in the player.
Securing Vieira on a permanent basis would provide HSV with a significant boost in attacking quality as they aim to challenge for promotion to the Bundesliga. For Arsenal, the sale would represent a recouping of funds for a player who hasn’t yet broken into the first team, allowing them to reinvest in other areas of the squad.
