Aston Villa are exploring options to bolster their midfield following the impending departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall emerging as a potential target. United activated a £35million release clause in Tielemans’ contract, prompting Villa to accelerate their search for a replacement.
Sources close to the club have indicated that Villa anticipated Tielemans’ exit and have already compiled a shortlist of candidates. Bergvall, a 20-year-old midfielder, has reportedly informed Spurs of his desire to leave and is believed to be interested in a move to Villa Park. While no formal contact has yet been made between the two clubs, Tielemans’ transfer is expected to expedite Villa’s pursuit.
Villa recently signed Johan Manzambi to strengthen their midfield, but manager Unai Emery is seeking further additions, specifically a player with a more defensive profile than the attacking Manzambi. Although Bergvall possesses technical ability, his defensive contributions are not considered a particular strength. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is also on Villa’s radar, having impressed in the Premier League.
Tielemans has been a key player for Emery, providing experience and composure in midfield. His departure will necessitate a replacement capable of filling that void. Bergvall is viewed as a prospect who could develop into that role over time, offering a blend of technical skill and energy. However, Palace have not yet received any direct approaches for Wharton, mirroring the situation with Bergvall.
Villa are expected to intensify their interest in Bergvall in the coming weeks, contingent on the confirmation of Tielemans’ move to Manchester United. Bergvall’s willingness to leave Tottenham, coupled with the timing of Tielemans’ exit, could prove pivotal in completing a deal before the transfer window closes.
