Vinicius Junior has informed Real Madrid that significant changes are necessary before he will commit to a contract extension, according to reports from Radio Marca in Spain. The 25-year-old’s current deal at the Bernabeu is set to expire in the summer of 2027, and renewal talks have reportedly stalled.
This development comes amidst a challenging season for both Vinicius and the club as a whole. The Brazilian international has been a frequent target of jeers from the Real Madrid supporters, following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign that will see Los Blancos finish a season without a major trophy for the second year running. They currently trail Barcelona by 11 points in La Liga with only four matches remaining, and were recently eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich.
Earlier in the season, Vinicius experienced a strained relationship with then-head coach Xabi Alonso, culminating in an on-field outburst after being substituted during a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in October. DAZN cameras captured him stating his desire to leave the team. While he later apologized to the fans, he has continued to face criticism from the stands, even after Alonso was replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa in January.
Radio Marca reports that Vinicius is seeking more than just a salary increase. He reportedly feels “restrained” within the club and desires a significant shift in the overall atmosphere before considering a new contract. Despite the difficulties, Vinicius has still enjoyed a productive season in front of goal, scoring 21 times in all competitions – just three shy of his career-best tally of 24 from the 2023-24 season.
Recent form has been strong for the forward, with four goals in his last three league appearances, including a brace against Espanyol. However, contract negotiations may be put on hold until after the upcoming World Cup, according to ESPN. Vinicius himself has previously expressed his desire to remain at Real Madrid, stating his trust in club president Florentino Perez and a belief that an agreement will be reached “at the right time.” The situation highlights the delicate balance between player ambition and club expectations, and could shape Real Madrid’s attacking options in the seasons to come.
