Celtic have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek, with the 22-year-old stating he is prepared to leave Old Trafford this summer. Vitek, contracted to Manchester United until 2028, has spent the last several seasons on loan at Accrington Stanley, FC Blau-Weiss Linz, and most recently, Bristol City.
Despite not yet making a senior appearance for United, Vitek enjoyed a successful loan spell at Bristol City in the 2025/26 campaign, earning the club’s Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, and Young Player of the Year awards. He has now indicated a desire for regular first-team football, stating he is open to both another loan or a permanent transfer.
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has publicly stated the Scottish Premiership club’s need for a new goalkeeper, currently relying on Ross Doohan and Viljami Sinisalo. O’Neill emphasized the need for competition and a goalkeeper who can challenge for the number one spot, expressing a preference for someone who isn’t content with being a backup. He alluded to seeking a player in the mould of experienced keepers like Kasper Schmeichel and Joe Hart, but one who is still ambitious.
Reports from Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke earlier this month indicated Celtic’s initial interest in Vitek following his successful season with Bristol City. Vitek himself confirmed to BBC Sport that he is actively seeking a new club before the start of Manchester United’s pre-season, though he participated in a recent friendly against Wrexham. He stated, “I’m ready to go somewhere again and hopefully be number one,” and confirmed “a few interests” are currently on the table.
The move would address a clear need for Celtic, while providing Vitek with the opportunity for consistent playing time that is currently unavailable to him at Manchester United. Should a deal be agreed, it could provide competition and depth in the goalkeeping position for the Scottish champions.
