Luka Vuskovic has told Tottenham Hotspur he wishes to join Brighton and Hove Albion, according to TEAMtalk. The 19-year-old Croatian defender was expected to return to Tottenham this summer following a loan spell with Hamburg, where he impressed. He was previously considered a potential first-team competitor under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
However, Vuskovic now believes his development would be better served with a move to Brighton, despite interest from other European clubs. The Seagulls have responded by submitting a £30million offer for the highly-rated centre-back, with their pursuit gaining momentum as they anticipate the departure of Jan Paul van Hecke.
Tottenham are simultaneously pushing to sign Van Hecke from Brighton, with talks between the clubs ongoing and a deal appearing increasingly likely. This potential exchange has accelerated Brighton’s need for defensive reinforcements, leading them to prioritise Vuskovic. Brighton have been extensively scouting Vuskovic for the past year, believing he possesses the attributes to thrive under new head coach Fabian Hurzeler.
Vuskovic reportedly wants to work under Hurzeler and feels regular Premier League football will accelerate his progress. Initially, Tottenham viewed Vuskovic as a long-term prospect, particularly given uncertainty surrounding the futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. However, the arrival of Marcus Senesi and the pursuit of Van Hecke have altered the landscape.
Tottenham are now seriously considering Brighton’s offer, though a decision is linked to the outcome of the Van Hecke negotiations. While the two deals aren't formally connected, progress on one could facilitate the other. Brighton value Van Hecke at over £65million, with Brighton’s £30million bid for Vuskovic potentially opening a path to compromise. Vuskovic’s representatives have also suggested the inclusion of a buy-back clause in any agreement, an option Tottenham would consider.
Discussions are ongoing as both clubs weigh their options.
