Kai Wagner has completed a transfer back to Philadelphia Union from Birmingham City for a reported fee of €3.5 million, according to Transfermarkt. The move sees the German left-back return to the MLS side after just six months in the English Championship. Birmingham City had initially signed Wagner from Philadelphia for €2.5 million in January.
Wagner’s return was motivated by personal reasons, as stated by the player following the completion of the deal. He expressed that the decision to rejoin Philadelphia “came from my heart!” The 29-year-old made 18 appearances for Birmingham City during their Championship campaign, but the club ultimately failed in their bid for consecutive promotions.
He initially joined Philadelphia Union in 2019 from Würzburger Kickers, where he had spent two seasons in Germany’s 3. Liga. During his first spell with the Union, Wagner quickly established himself as a key player, winning the Supporters’ Shield twice. He was also a three-time MLS All-Star, demonstrating his consistent high level of performance in the league.
Prior to his move to the United States, Wagner came through the youth ranks at German Bundesliga clubs Augsburg and Schalke, though he did not make a senior appearance for either side. His subsequent development in Germany’s lower leagues and then in MLS showcased his ability to adapt and excel in different footballing environments. The quick turnaround from a €2.5 million sale to a €3.5 million repurchase indicates Philadelphia’s high valuation of Wagner’s contributions and his importance to their squad. Wagner’s return bolsters Philadelphia’s left-back options and provides a familiar face in their pursuit of further MLS success.
