VfL Wolfsburg will be without new signing Timon Wellenreuther for several weeks after the goalkeeper sustained a knee injury during a pre-season friendly against Olympique Lyon on Friday. The 30-year-old picked up the injury during Wolfsburg’s 2-0 defeat and subsequent medical examinations have confirmed the extent of the damage.
While an operation is not required, the club anticipates Wellenreuther will be sidelined for a significant portion of the early season. This represents an early setback for both the player and Wolfsburg, who recently completed the transfer from Feyenoord Rotterdam approximately two weeks ago.
Wellenreuther returned to German football after a nine-year spell abroad, signing a contract with Wolfsburg that extends until 2029. He was brought in to immediately challenge for, and likely secure, the position of first-choice goalkeeper for the Bundesliga side. Prior to joining Wolfsburg, Wellenreuther served as captain for Feyenoord, demonstrating leadership qualities alongside his goalkeeping ability.
The injury complicates Wolfsburg’s plans to overhaul their goalkeeping department this summer. Marius Müller has already departed for Aberdeen, and the club also expects Kamil Grabara to leave. Grabara had previously been the club’s number one, meaning Wellenreuther’s acquisition was intended to fill a crucial void. The club will now need to reassess their options in goal as they prepare for the start of the Bundesliga campaign.
Wellenreuther’s career has included spells at Schalke 04 and Karlsruher SC before his move to the Netherlands in 2015. He has accumulated considerable experience across multiple leagues, and his absence will be felt as Wolfsburg navigate the initial stages of the season.
