Werder Bremen are considering a move for VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Mattias Svanberg, but any potential transfer is dependent on the sale of Jens Stage to TSG Hoffenheim, according to reports from Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung and DeichStube.
The 27-year-old Svanberg has been identified as a potential replacement for Stage, who is attracting significant interest from Hoffenheim following a productive season with Bremen.
Werder Bremen are reportedly seeking more than €10 million for the 29-year-old Stage, who scored ten goals last season. The club is prepared to reinvest those funds into strengthening their midfield, with Svanberg emerging as a primary target.
Svanberg joined Wolfsburg in 2022 from Bologna, and has featured in 101 Bundesliga matches over four seasons. Despite his experience, Wolfsburg are open to selling the Swedish international following their relegation from the Bundesliga – the club’s first ever. The relegation occurred after a defeat in the promotion/relegation playoff against Paderborn.
Wolfsburg’s negotiating position is complicated by Svanberg’s contract, which runs until 2027, and their diminished status after relegation. The club are keen to avoid losing a valuable asset for a reduced fee. Svanberg made a memorable start to his international career, scoring shortly after his debut appearance for Sweden at the 2022 World Cup against Tunisia.
If Stage does depart, Bremen will likely push to finalize a deal for Svanberg, bolstering their midfield options ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga campaign. The transfer could provide Svanberg with a platform to rebuild his career in the top flight following Wolfsburg’s demotion.
