Werder Bremen's Mitchell Weiser faces uncertain future as contract winds down
Werder Bremen defender Mitchell Weiser is nearing a return from a long-term knee injury but faces an uncertain future at the club with his contract set to expire in just two months. According to German publication BILD, the 32-year-old wing-back is close to rejoining team training after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last July, which has kept him sidelined for the entire season so far.
However, with only four fixtures remaining in the Bundesliga campaign, a return to competitive action this season is not guaranteed. This situation means Weiser's last appearance for Werder could remain the 4-1 victory on the final matchday of the 2022/23 season. The timing of his recovery presents a significant complication for both the player and the club as they navigate his contractual situation.
Weiser has reportedly had a contract extension offer from Werder Bremen ready to sign for some time but has yet to make a decision, according to the same sources. Further talks between the player and the club are expected to take place soon, although BILD indicates the outcome remains completely open. This leaves open the possibility that Weiser could depart the Weserstadion on a free transfer this summer.
The experienced defender, who has also played for Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, and Hertha Berlin, joined Werder permanently in 2022 after a successful loan spell. His pace and attacking contributions from the right flank made him a key figure prior to his injury. His potential departure would represent a significant loss of experience for a Werder side that has battled relegation concerns in recent seasons.
For Weiser, the priority will be proving his fitness and demonstrating he can return to his previous level after such a serious injury, whether his future lies in Bremen or elsewhere. The coming weeks will be critical in determining if he can add to his 64 appearances and 10 assists for the club, or if his time in green and white has already concluded.
