Weston McKennie praises Spalletti and reveals Ronaldo's post-match routine
Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie has described Italy and former club coach Luciano Spalletti as the best manager of his career in a wide-ranging interview. The 25-year-old American, speaking to DAZN as part of their 'Remember the Name' series, also shared insights into his life off the pitch and recalled the extreme professionalism of former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
McKennie, who is suspended for Juventus's upcoming match against Atalanta, highlighted his strong bond with Spalletti, who coached him at Juventus last season. He stated that Spalletti gave him a sense of security and that his method of criticism was always constructive, aimed at improvement rather than humiliation. This relationship proved crucial on the field, with McKennie becoming a key and versatile driving force for Spalletti's Juventus side.
The midfielder also reflected on his unique position as the first American player in Juventus history, a fact he says he may only fully appreciate at the end of his career. He addressed past doubts about his ability by stating that his performances and achievements should speak for themselves. McKennie portrayed himself as an atypical professional, someone who maintains a childlike joy and deliberately separates his life from football after training, enjoying music, golf, and his dogs.
He revealed that a broken foot suffered in 2022 was a pivotal moment that underscored the importance of having a life beyond the sport. The injury, which kept him out for three months during a positive run of form, forced him to consider his identity outside of football. On the pitch, he reserved his highest praise for Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he played for a season in Turin.
According to McKennie, Ronaldo's legendary work ethic was entirely accurate. He recounted returning from away games at three in the morning, only for Ronaldo to take an ice bath instead of going home. The Portuguese star would then be in the gym the next morning after a difficult match, working his entire body. McKennie is currently a fundamental part of the Juventus squad under manager Massimiliano Allegri, with his recent form and adaptability making him a difficult player to replace during his suspension.
