Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox has reportedly approved the pursuit of Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, according to reports from Caught Offside. The potential transfer comes as United prepare for a busy summer window ahead of their return to Champions League competition.
United successfully strengthened their attack and goalkeeping options last summer, and are now prioritizing an overhaul of their midfield, potentially with as many as three new arrivals. However, the club also recognizes the need for depth in other areas, with Hall identified as a quality competitor for current first-choice left-back Luke Shaw.
Shaw has rediscovered his form this season, but his fitness cannot be guaranteed for an entire campaign encompassing multiple competitions. Hall, who is valued at around £55 million, would provide a reliable alternative and add tactical flexibility to Erik ten Hag’s squad. The 20-year-old has demonstrated versatility, having previously played in midfield, and has impressed with his spatial awareness and timing of challenges.
Newcastle’s failure to qualify for the Champions League is reportedly contributing to Hall’s desire to explore other options. United face competition from Bayern Munich for the player’s signature, but Wilcox is actively ‘pushing the club’ to make a serious offer. Micah Richards recently suggested Hall should start ahead of Shaw for England, praising his all-around abilities on The Rest is Football podcast.
Discussions regarding a potential move for Hall can begin before and during the upcoming World Cup, as the player was surprisingly omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. A successful transfer would provide United with a long-term solution at left-back and further solidify their squad depth as they aim to compete on multiple fronts.
