Nico Williams has stated his desire to remain at Athletic Club for the duration of his career, dismissing speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal. The 23-year-old winger addressed his future while on international duty with Spain at the 2026 World Cup, confirming his contentment in Bilbao.
Williams was the subject of significant transfer interest from both Arsenal and Barcelona in the previous two transfer windows, but he opted to sign a new, long-term contract with Athletic Club last summer. His current deal with the club, managed by Edin Terzic, is set to run for another nine years, leading to suggestions Arsenal might revisit their interest in securing a new left winger.
Speaking to El Larguero, Williams expressed his gratitude to Athletic Club and his ambition to extend his stay indefinitely. “I am very comfortable at Athletic,” he said. “The first thing I want to do is repay the affection they have given me this year. I would like to see out my entire contract - I’d sign up for that right now - but in football, anything can happen.” He added that he would only consider a departure if the club actively sought to sell him, stating, “If the club wants to get rid of me, then I’ll have to leave, but if it were up to me, I’d sign up to be there for the rest of my life.”
Williams has been hampered by a pubalgia injury in recent months, limiting his playing time for both Athletic Club and Spain. He recently returned to action, featuring briefly in Spain’s 0-0 draw against Cape Verde at the World Cup. He explained the frustration of the injury, noting its unpredictable nature and the potential for relapse, but expressed confidence in his recovery and the support of the coaching staff. He managed 32 appearances for Athletic Club last season, scoring six goals and providing seven assists despite the ongoing fitness concerns.
The player is currently valued at €57.9 million, with an estimated value range between €52.1 million and €63.7 million. Williams’ commitment represents a significant boost for Athletic Club, solidifying their squad for the upcoming seasons and potentially deterring future approaches from top European clubs.
