Wojciech Szczesny reaffirms Barcelona commitment despite exit talk
Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has spoken of his commitment to the club's immediate and future ambitions, despite speculation surrounding his long-term future at Camp Nou. The 36-year-old, who is under contract until 2027, addressed the media following Barcelona's Champions League quarter-final elimination at the hands of Atletico Madrid earlier this week.
Szczesny expressed pride in the team's efforts in Europe this season, telling Catalan outlet MD that the performance in the second leg at the Metropolitano was "incredible." He acknowledged the disappointment of extending the club's wait for a Champions League title to at least twelve years, but struck an optimistic note about the project under manager Hansi Flick. "I'm sure that this team will win the Champions League in the coming years because the talent and attitude of the players we have is a guarantee of a great future for the club," Szczesny said.
The immediate focus for the squad is now firmly on securing the La Liga title. Barcelona sit nine points clear of rivals Real Madrid with just seven matches remaining in the season. Szczesny confirmed that Flick had given the players a brief rest before a full reset towards the domestic run-in. "We will give everything to ensure a beautiful end to the season," the Polish international stated, emphasizing the need to channel their European disappointment into securing the one trophy left available to them.
Amid reports that this could be his final season with the club, Szczesny was effusive about his experience in Catalonia. "My family and I are very, very happy. We love it here," he said, while pragmatically acknowledging the realities of his age. "I know I won't be here long because I'm older but it's been a fantastic experience for me and my family. We are very grateful for the time we have been here."
The veteran goalkeeper joined Barcelona from Juventus in the summer of 2024 and has been a consistent presence since his arrival. His comments suggest a player fully invested in the current campaign, even as the club may begin to plan for a longer-term succession in the goalkeeping department. For now, Szczesny's priority is using his experience to guide Barcelona over the line in La Liga and building a foundation for future European challenges.
