Wolfsburg and Gladbach share points in tense Bundesliga stalemate
VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach played out a 0-0 draw at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday, a result that leaves both sides still seeking Bundesliga safety. The point edges Gladbach closer to mathematical survival, while Wolfsburg remains in the relegation zone, now just one point adrift of the playoff spot after FC St. Pauli's defeat.
For Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking, facing his former club in his second stint as coach, the match was a missed opportunity for a crucial victory. In a press conference before the game, he had framed it as a must-win, stating his desire for both clubs to stay up. Gladbach coach Eugen Polański, meanwhile, sought his first professional win against Wolfsburg and aimed to end a nine-match winless streak.
The visitors started brightly and created the better chances in an open first half. Kevin Stöger fired just wide within the opening minute, and Franck Honorat saw an effort saved by Wolfsburg's Kamil Grabara, who was called into action several times. Haris Tabaković also tested the Polish goalkeeper, who was a key figure throughout. Wolfsburg's best opportunity of the half fell to Mohamed Amoura, whose curling shot in the 44th minute missed the bottom corner by a matter of centimeters.
The second half failed to maintain the same tempo, with both sides showing fatigue and clear chances becoming scarce. Wolfsburg introduced Saël Kumbedi in the 70th minute, and the substitute injected some pace, forcing a corner and later firing over. Gladbach's best late chance came from substitute Giovanni Reyna, whose 84th-minute header struck the post with Grabara beaten.
The match ended in acrimony when Gladbach's Jens Castrop was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a foul on Kumbedi, leading to a confrontation between players that delayed the final whistle. Gladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas was named Man of the Match for his role in securing the clean sheet.
With the draw, Gladbach climbs to eleventh place. According to the match report, a single victory from their final three fixtures will now guarantee their Bundesliga status for next season. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, faces a critical trip to SC Freiburg next weekend, knowing their fate remains in the balance with three games remaining.
