Wolfsburg's Jonas Wind ruled out for weeks with muscle injury
VfL Wolfsburg striker Jonas Wind will be sidelined for three to four weeks after suffering a fresh muscle injury, head coach Dieter Hecking confirmed on Thursday. The Danish international sustained the issue in his other leg during a training ground duel, marking another setback in a season already disrupted by fitness problems.
Hecking revealed the news at a pre-match press conference, detailing that the injury occurred as Wind took a long stride while challenging two defenders. The coach expressed his disappointment, noting that the 24-year-old had only recently begun to demonstrate his importance to the side after returning from a previous hamstring issue. Wind has managed just 11 appearances across all competitions this season.
The timing is particularly frustrating for both player and club, as Wind had just scored his first goal of the Bundesliga campaign in last week's 6-3 defeat to league leaders Bayer Leverkusen. That performance had suggested he was regaining match sharpness and form. His absence now depletes Wolfsburg's attacking options as they sit in a congested mid-table, with the team having won only one of their last five league matches.
This latest injury continues a difficult adaptation period for Wind since his move from FC Copenhagen in January 2022 for a reported fee of €12 million. While he showed promise with nine goals in his first full season, recurring muscular problems have severely limited his ability to establish a consistent run in the team. His physical resilience has become a growing concern for the club's medical and coaching staff.
Hecking stated he hopes to have Wind available again before the season concludes in May, emphasizing the striker's recent positive contributions. The club will now rely more heavily on other forwards like Kevin Behrens and Lukas Nmecha, who is also working his way back to full fitness. Wind's repeated injuries may also prompt Wolfsburg to assess their long-term striking plans during the upcoming summer transfer window, though the immediate focus is on his recovery.
