VfL Wolfsburg have agreed a deal to sign Hauke Wahl from St. Pauli ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga season, according to Sky Germany. The transfer fee is reported to be €2 million, with potential add-ons, and Wahl will sign a contract with Wolfsburg that runs until June 2029.
The move comes as Wolfsburg begin rebuilding their squad following their relegation playoff defeat to Paderborn, which saw them drop out of the Bundesliga. The club is aiming for a swift return to the top flight and has already made moves to strengthen their options, recently securing Hertha BSC captain Fabian Reese.
Wahl, 29, has become a popular figure at St. Pauli since joining from Holstein Kiel in 2019. He has made over 150 appearances for the club, establishing himself as a key player in their defence and earning a reputation for his aerial ability and committed performances. He was a regular starter for St. Pauli throughout the 2023-24 season, contributing to their ultimately unsuccessful attempt to avoid relegation.
The defender’s arrival at Wolfsburg addresses a clear need for reinforcement in their backline. Wolfsburg struggled defensively last season, conceding 63 goals in the Bundesliga, and will be hoping Wahl can bring stability and leadership to their defence. His experience in the German second tier could also prove valuable as Wolfsburg aim to navigate a competitive promotion campaign.
For St. Pauli, losing Wahl represents a significant blow, both on and off the pitch. However, the €2 million fee represents a good return for a player entering the final year of his contract. The club will now need to identify a replacement to fill the void left by the departure of their established centre-back. This transfer provides Wolfsburg with a proven defender and St. Pauli with funds to rebuild for a promotion push.
